The Making of a Winter House Cake

This is a tutorial on how to make a house shaped cake. As you will see below, the actual cake is an 8 inch square cake. I was however able to transform that cake into the shape of a house through the use of dry fondant panels. To read more about this cake and see other looks of it, click here.

THE PROCESS:

(1) The first thing you want to do is make the templates for the house which should be made about a week before the cake is designed. A house like this is a bit complex and uses several pieces of dry fondant panels. Start by making the major structure of the cake with openings for the windows. Leave out the door, window frames and ledges until the house structure has dried. A very detailed post on how to make to make dry fondant templates can be found here.

(2) After the panels have dried, attach the fondant door and window ledges and frames to the fondant panels.

(3) Make the tree on the right side of the house. A tutorial on how to make the conifer tree can be fond here.

(4) Next, bake the cake and frost it. Note that the height of the cake should be less than the height of the dry fondant panels.

(5) Place the cake on the cake board and start attaching the panels on the cake. Use a bit of water or vodka to attach the panels to the cake itself and melted white chocolate to attach the edges of the panels to each other. When you are done, brush the fondant with vodka to remove icing sugar residues.

(6) When you are done, drape the cake board with white fondant, folding it as you go so it looks like heaps of snow. Be sure to cover around the base of the house with the white fondant.

(7) Next, place white fondant at strategic locations on the house to look like snow. Also use the white fondant to cover any imperfections you might notice in the house structure.

(8) Finish the cake by placing the tree and covering the sides of the cake board with a ribbon. That’s all there is to it. Happy caking!
