This is a baby shower cake I made as a last minute order. What that means is that it is not a difficult cake to make. It has a crib with a baby in it. Below, I will be showing you the various steps on how this cake was made. You can see other views of this cake here.

THE PROCESS:

(1) The first step is to make the frames for the crib. They should be made about a week in advance. I have a post here on how to make bed frames for cribs. You will need to change the dimensions used in that post as this crib is a lot smaller. The dimensions of this crib is 4″ x 3″ x 3″.

(2) The next step is to make the baby. I used a silicon mold for this. This mold can be bought online on ebay or Amazon. You will need to brush the hair with a darker color and paint the lips pink after unmolding the baby.

(3) Next, make the purple flowers. I used a medium rose petal cutter and placed a smaller one on it. A silver pearl sugar was placed in the middle. The flowers could be made before hand and dried in flower molds. TIP: The flowers could be dried in empty egg crates in the absence of small flower molds.

(4) Next, cover the cake board with white fondant. I have a post here on how I cover my cake boards.

(5) Next, drape the cake with white fondant and place the cake on the cake board.

(6) Next, color some fondant powder blue and cut it into 1 inch strips. Use the side of a brush to thin out the edges of the strips and create ruffles. Brush the cake with some water or vodka and stick the blue fondant strips in layers on the cake starting from the bottom of the cake to about 2/3rd of the cake.

(8) Cut out a 1 cm strip of blue fondant. Run a stitching wheel along the edges and stick it to the top of the cake to cover the top of the last ruffle. Use some leftover fondant strip to create a bow. This will be attached to the front of the cake later on.

(9) Next, build the crib. To do this, place a slab of fondant the same dimensions as the crib on top of the cake. Build the crib using the tutorial here. Lastly, Cover the bottom of the crib with some white fondant.
