Rainbows add a lot fun and colors to cakes. Kids find them very exciting. They are also very easy to make. Rainbows are a lot more effective when they are inserted into clouds. I have a tutorial for 3D clouds which can be found here.

(2) Place a round bowl on your board. This will be used to shape the rainbow. Roll out the colored fondants into strips and place around the bowl one after the other. Apply some water to the sides of each strip before placing the next. Be sure to place the colors in the correct order.

(3) After all the strips have been placed, remove bowl an use a knife to cut off excess fondant from both ends.

(4) If using the rainbow as it is, place some thick floral wires into both ends and allow the rainbow to dry for about 3 days before using. The floral wires will be inserted into the cake to make the rainbow stay upright. If however the ends of the rainbow are going to be inserted into clouds, do not make use of floral wires.

TIP: After rainbow has dried for a day, transfer it to a wire cooling rack so it dries faster.

Inserting into Clouds

Tutorial for 3D Clouds can be found here.

Allow the fondant rainbow to dry properly before inserting into clouds. This would take about 3 days.

Make a long deep hole in the middle of two prepared clouds and insert the ends of the rainbow into the cloud.

The rainbow should stand without any additional support after it has been inserted into the clouds.

The rainbow and clouds should be allowed to dry for at least a day before using.
