Fondant Blossom Flowers without Molds or Cutters

This is a tutorial on how to make fondant blossom flowers without the use of molds or flower cutters. It is an easy way of making flowers and the result is so beautiful it is hard to believe they were made without the use of fancy tools. These flowers are best used as filler flowers for bouquets and other floral arrangements.

TOOLS:

(1) A Skewer

(2) Sharp Blade

(3) Floral Wires

EDIBLE COMPONENTS:

(1) Fondant

(2) Color Paste

(3) Sugar Pearls (Optional)

(4) Color Dust (Optional)

PROCEDURE:

(1) Color and shape fondant into a little cone.

(2)  Insert a skewer into the middle of the wider end of the cone and use a blade to make 4 cuts on the bottom half of the cone. The cuts should get to the middle of the cone and touch the skewer and should divide the bottom half of the cone into 4 equal parts.

Note that you can make as many cuts on the cone as you wish depending on how many petals you want to make, The red blossoms in the naked cake below were made with 5 petals.

(3) Remove the skewer and fan out the cone to reveal 4 petals.

(4) Using your fingers, pinch the tip of the petals to make them pointed.

(5) Begin to flatten each petal with you fingers until they are thin and full. You can shape the petals any way you like. They can be full and round or more pointed.

(6) Bend one end of a floral wire to form a loop.

(7) Insert the floral wire into the flower from the top of the flower until the loop is buried in the flower. Pinch the bottom of the flower to secure it tightly around the floral wire. Bend the other end of the floral wire to form a hook and hang the flower upside down to dry.

(8) Optional: when the flower is dry, brush it with color dust for better color variation and intensity and steam the flower. Leave to dry.

(10) Also optional, stick a sugar pearl to the middle of the flower to hide the hole created from the insertion of the floral wire.

(11) Use dried flowers on decorated cakes. Happy caking!
