This is a tutorial on how to make headphones using fondant. These headphones can be used as toppers for music themed cakes such as the Dancehall Cake below. The procedure is easy. You however need to give it enough time to dry so you have a very strong structure.

PROCEDURE:

(1) Roll out white fondant into about 1/2 cm thickness.

(2) Using a ruler and a pizza cutter, cut out a strip of fondant 1 inch wide and 16 inches long in the middle of the rolled out fondant to create the headband. Leave both ends of the strip still attached to the larger body of fondant.

(3) Using a 3 inch round cookie cutter, mark the ends of the strips with the cutters and cut out the circles using an x-acto knife. Remove the excess fondant and leave the body of the headphones this way to dry out for about 30 minutes. You will be wrapping it around a cake pan and if the fondant is very soft, the round part of the headphones will lose shape.

(4) After 30 minutes, insert floral wires into both ends of the headphones. The wires should go about halfway into the round headphones.

(5) Place a 7 inch round cake pan on your drying surface and wrap the fondant around it. Place folded paper towels under the middle part of the headband to elevate it. Use containers to support the sides of the headphones. Leave the headphones this way to dry for a week. I’m telling you, you want this headphones to dry properly or the top will snap. Trust me on this.

(6) After a week of drying, remove the cake pan. It is time to start making the other parts of the headphone.

(7) Roll out pink fondant and cut it into the same length and breath as the headband. Stick this to the outside part of the headband using vodka. I try to avoid using water as much as possible so as not to soak the fondant. Alcohol evaporates quickly. Also cut out a thin layer of 1 inch round pink fondant and stick this to the middle of the inside of the headphones.

(8) Next, make the cushions. Roll out white fondant into a quarter of an inch thickness, place cling film over it and cut out circles using a 3 inch round cutter. The cling film will give you curved edges. Use the pipping tip to cut out holes in the middle of both circles.

(9) Using your fondant wheel, make grooves from the middle of the rings outwards to mimic cushions on headphones.

(10) Use vodka to stick these rings to the inner part of the headphones.

(11) Next, Make the designs on the outside of the headphones. Cut out 4 circles of various sizes and colors as shown in the picture below and stick them together. Stick these to the outer part of the headphones. I also made other designs using white and grey fondant.

(10) Leave the headphones to dry for about 48 hours. These new additions will add some weight to the headphones so you want them to dry as fondant gets lighter as it dries.

(11) After 48 hours, mix an equal part of vodka and corn syrup and brush every part of the headphones apart from the cushions. The vodka will evaporate leaving the corn syrup which will harden and make the headphones shine like plastic. Again, leave the headphones for another 48 hours to dry (lots of drying for this one eh?).

(12) After 48 hours, it can be used on your cakes. Make sure you do not bend the headband when inserting the floral wires into the cake or the headband will snap. Happy caking.

Thanks so much for this, I am planning on making this for my 17 yr old son on his graduation day. He is a basketballer, a music lover (rapper) & he aspires to be a pilot. Thinking of how to bring this concept together, he made me proud with a very good waec result. Plz will appreciate your kind suggestion.

I think sometimes when you use too many themes on a single cake, the cake can get clumsy. I’d stick to just 2 themes: basketball and music. You can make basketball tiers like one in this post and use the headphones as toppers.
