This is a tutorial on how I made this lovely Diego and Dora themed cake for the birthday of a friend’s 2 year old daughter. This tutorial will show you a few tricks on how to turn mistakes into beauty. To read more about this cake and see several pictures of it, click on this link.

THE PROCESS

(1) The first thing you need to do is make the topper which goes on the cake. The topper should be the same size as the cake. I have a pictorial here on how I made this 2D topper. It should be made a few days before the actual cake is made as it needs some time to dry.

(2) Next, cover the cake board with blue fondant. I have a tutorial here on how I cover my cake boards.

(3) Next. drape the cake with white fondant and place the cake on the cake board. The cake should be stuck to the board with melted white chocolate.

(4) Next, color fondant ivory, roll it out and cut it to a size the same height as the cake. Brush the sides of the cake with water and wrap the cake with the ivory fondant.

(5) Next, using the base of paint brushes, make holes in front of the cake.

(6) Next transfer the 2D fondant topper to the top of the cake.

NOTE: Now, this was supposed to be the end of this cake which was gonna be surrounded by cupcakes. However, I did not cut the ivory fondant I used to wrap the cake high enough. Thus, there was a gap between the topper and the sides of the cake. If done perfectly, it was supposed to turn out like the Spiderman Cake below. In a bid to cover this error, I chose to make fondant leaves to cover the sides of the cake. Most people who compliment this cake always talk about the leaves. Little do they know that their purpose was to fix an error.

(7) To make the fondant leaves, use a lily petal cutter to cut out green fondant leaves. Use a sharp blade to cut out triangles on the leaves. Roll out yellow fondant, brush it with a little water, place the leaves on the yellow fondant and cut out a yellow border around the leaves. Leave these to dry for about an hour before sticking them to the top sides of the cake with some water.

(8) This cake was accompanied by 24 cupcakes with Diego and Dora themed fondant toppers. These toppers were made in advance and most of them were done freehand. The green crimped circles were made with a cookie cutter. The stars were cut out with a small star cutter and decorated. The booths were made the same way I make my baby booties. The flowers were made with a small flower mold. The map was made by wrapping ivory fondant  and decorating. The bag was made freehand by folding purple fondant and decorating it. The logs were made freehand while the leaves were made with a mold. The butterfly was made with a mold.
