This is a tutorial on how to achieve a marbled look on your cake board. This is a very unique way of making your cake boards look like marbled surfaces. Contrary to its intricate look, it is actually very easy to achieve this marbled effect on a cake board. In this post, I will also be sharing a very important trick on achieving the best marbled designs on your cake boards.

TOOLS:

(1) Cake Board

(2) Fondant Smoother

(3) Rolling Pin

(4) Pizza Cutter or Sharp Blade

(5) Paint Brush

(6) Indenting Tool

EDIBLE COMPONENTS:

(1) Fondant. I use Marshmallow Fondant. Recipe here

(2) Water

(3) Food Color Paste

(4) Shortening

(5) Alcohol (Vodka)

PROCEDURE:

(1) Roughly divide your fondant into 4 parts. Merge 2 parts together which will be left white. Color one part grey and the other part copper. You can of course color the fondant with any colors of your choice. It is however advisable to keep half of the fondant white.

(2) Roll the fondant into logs and stick them together using a little water and a brush.

(3) Now begins the process of twisting and folding. Twist the fondant into a spiral making sure that all the different colors twist together.

(4) Fold the twisted fondant into 3 and twist again. You can repeat this folding and twisting for as many times as you like, depending on how merged you want the colors to be. I did it only 3 times here.

(5) After the final twist, fold the fondant into 3 and flatted it with your palms.

(6) Use a rolling pin and start rolling out the fondant. Remember to put some icing sugar on your rolling surface so the fondant does not stick to it. Also remember to rotate the fondant as you roll it out. Note that it is very important that you keep the fondant from sticking to the work surface for unlike rolling out regular fondant which can be scraped off the work surface, kneaded and rolled again, you can only roll out this fondant once.

(7) Now comes the trick for achieving the perfect marble. Flip the fondant so that the underneath becomes the top. You will notice that the marbling effect underneath is a lot more striking that that on the top. Keep rolling out the fondant until you achieve the desired size of your cake board.

TIP: This rolled out fondant can also be used to drape a cake.

(8) Brush the cake board with a little bit of water and drape it with the rolled out fondant. Use a fondant smoother to smooth out the surface. If you notice air bubbles, simply prick them with a needle and keep smoothing out the surface of the cake board. Use a pizza cutter or blade to cut off the excess fondant.

(9) For extra gloss on the marbled cake board, rob some shortening on your palms and rub the surface of your cake board. Your cake board can be used this way after it has dried.

(10) To divide the cake board into segments, use a ruler and indentation tool to divide the board into equal squares. Use the edge of the ruler to make the demarcations larger.

(11) Use some black color paste thinned out with some vodka to brush the demarcations on the cake board. Allow the cake board to dry before using.
