I was asked to make a bridal shower cake using inspiration from a bridal bouquet. This is a documentary on how that cake was made. Hopefully you will be inspired by this post when making your next cake. To see more about this cake, click here.

THE PROCESS

(1) The first thing I did was to cover the cake with white fondant. You will notice that this fondant covering is not smooth. I however left it this way as the purpose of this covering is to seal in the cake. Like a crumb coating, this usually gives me a clean surface to work with and ensures that the cake is properly sealed within.

(2) The cake was placed on a cake board painted to look like wood. You can read more about this technique here.

(3) The next step was to place a pink panel in front of the cake. The purpose of this panel will be revealed in the steps below.

(4) I chose to work with soft colors with this cake. The next thing I did was to wrap the side of the cake with ivory fondant leaving the pink panel in front visible. This step begins to show the cake for what it is, a bustier.

(5) Still working on the bustier, I added some floral and leave designs to the side of the cake along with some white sugar pearls. I finished this with a few vertical stitch lines.

(6) Next, I created two panels and lace holes in front of the bustier.

(7) The last step for the main cake was to lace it and place a dainty bow on top of the bustier.

(8) Done with the main body of the cake, I decided to work on the top which is the flower bouquet. I made a wreath and some flowers and leaves earlier. These were left to dry for a couple of days. A tutorial on how to make the rose flowers can be found here. All the flowers were made with marshmallow fondant.

(11) I also placed some petals and leaves on the body of the cake and on the cake board. These additional details are part of what makes this cake stand out.
