Life they say begins at 40. Thus when a friend of mine was celebrating his 40th birthday, his wife was sure she wanted an impressive cake for the occasion. She wanted a cake which reflected things her husband loved: God, Family and his profession. We decided on showcasing these interests with books piled up on each other. This was how this cake was conceived.

The cake has 4 different tiers, each containing a different type of cake. The first tier is a French vanilla sponge frosted with vanilla buttercream; the second tier is a chocolate butter cake frosted with chocolate buttercream; the third tier is a coconut sponge cake frosted with coconut buttercream and the forth tier is a Nigerian cake frosted with vanilla buttercream. The designs on the cake were done with marshmallow fondant.

Although I do not have a tutorial on how this cake was made, the tutorial on how I made the law review cake below can be applied to this cake. (Tutorial here).

The blue and green flat books in the middle of the cake are fillers which were made entirely of marshmallow fondant.

I decided to place a pretty sleek alarm clock on the cake which reflected the age of the celebrant.

As with some of my cakes, some elements never make it to the final cake. In the case of this cake, I made a pair of glasses which never made it to the final cake as I felt they looked too cheesy. On second thought, I feel they would have looked really lovely on the cake.

I referred to this cake as a production and that’s exactly what it was.
