The husband of a friend was celebrating his 40th birthday and we were both brainstorming on the perfect cake to make for the event. Her daughter was also marking her first birthday on the same day and we had decided to go with a princess cake for the daughter. The idea came to me to make a tuxedo cake for the husband so as to compliment the princess cake. She bought into the idea, I went online to look for inspirations and this is what I came up with.

This is a two tier French Vanilla Sponge Cake filled with Vanilla Buttercream and covered with Marshmallow Fondant. The top tier is an 8 inch cake while the second tier is a 10 inch cake.

The cake was covered in black fondant and painted with black color paste in order to deepen the color and give it some shine. The white shirt was then added to the front of the cake. It is always tricky working with black and white fondant because the last thing you want to happen is for the black to stain the white.

The celebrants name is Femi and so I decided to write his make in black and boarder the name plate with white fondant so as to make it stand out.

Since he was celebrating his 40th birthday, the cake was topped with a 40 wearing a top hat to complete the black tie theme.

As a special touch, I decided to include a red rose on the left collar of the cake. Not only did this brighten up the cake, it also complimented the dress on the princess cake.

The celebrant was blown away, my friend excited, and the guests wowed. Its amazing the impact a cake can have on a celebration.
