You never really know what demands the next call for a cake is going to be and that is part of the joys of being a baker. I was asked to make a VeggieTales cake for a 3 year old fan. The only thing I knew about VeggieTales was a silly song called “Where is my hairbrush?” I carried out some research, watched a few shows online and got to work.

The cake is a 10 by 6 inch round French Vanilla Sponge cake frosted with Vanilla Buttercream Frosting and covered with Marshmallow Fondant.

I made the VeggieTales characters about a week prior to making the cake so they would have enough time to dry properly. It was hard trying to settle for which characters to feature as there are a whole lot of characters to choose from. I finally settled on these. Clockwise from the top left: Jimmy and Jerry Gourd, Pa Grape, Bob the Tomato, Larry the Cucumber, Petunia Rhubarb, Archibald Asparagus, Mr. Nezzer and Laura from the carrot family.

The cake itself was initially covered with yellow fondant and placed on a square cake board covered with leaf green fondant.

Thereafter, the bottom half of the game was coveted with teal blue fondant and all the other patterns were layered on from then on until I was satisfied with the look.

Before placing the VeggieTales characters on the cake, I created a round green rug with frills to serve as their platform and covered the top of the cake with it.

One by one, I placed each character on the cake in such as way as to give every one of them a strong stage presence.

The celebrant’s name was MT and I decided to showcase his name in the front of the cake.

Behind the cake is a little surprise, Mr. Lunt, who is a notable character on the show.
