This is a tutorial on how I made the Star Lager Beer Bottle Cape Cake above. As the tutorial below will show, it is a straightforward cake to execute. For links to the recipes used for this cake, click here.

TUTORIAL:

(1) First, make the top of the cap. In today’s world, most bakers will print the design out on edible paper and stick it on the finished cake. That certainly is a fastest way to achieve this look. I on the other hand love the artistry involved in cake decorating. To execute the topper, I had a picture of a Star lager beer bottle cap which I used as my reference. This cake is 10″ in diameter. Start by cutting out a 9″ white fondant circle. Cut out a 6.5″ blue circle and stick on the white circle. Brush each layer that you make with a 50/50 mixture of vodka and corn syrup for gloss. Next, place the black words on the cake. I used a cutter for this. They can however be made without a cutter using my tutorial here. Next, make the star and stick to the topper. Finally stick the “Star” word on it. You will notice that the word has a black shadow underneath it. My tutorial here shows how to achieve this look on letters. This topper can be made in advance and left to dry before transferring it to the top of your finished cake.

(2) Next, make the crown around the sides of the cap. There are several ways of achieving this look. I chose to go with my usual medium which is fondant. Fortunately, I have a fondant stiletto heel mold and decided to use it to make the crown. I’m sure the producers of this mold never contemplated this usage. To make the crown, make several heel molds and keep them in the fridge for about an hour to firm up. Stick the molds around a frosted cake, cut off the excess fondant and blend the edges of the mold on the cake. Return the cake to the fridge so the frosting firms up before draping the cake with fondant.

(4) Make a 50/50 mixture of vodka and corn syrup. Add some pearl dust to the mixture and brush the cake for gloss.

(5) Stick the topper on the cake. That’s all there is to it. Happy caking!
