Fondant Manchester United Logo Cake Topper Tutorial

This is a tutorial on how I made the large Manchester United Logo Cake Topper above. In today’s cake decorating world, toppers like these can be made easily by printing them on edible paper. Some bakers like myself however prefer to do things the old fashioned way. This post would also help those who do not have access to edible papers and printers. The method used here is my own method of creating 2D fondant images. You can find a complete tutorial on this here.

TOOLS:

(1) Printout of Large Manchester United Logo

(2) Sharp Blade/X-Acto Knife

(3) Rolling Pin

(4) Paint Brush

(5) Fondant Extruder

EDIBLE COMPONENTS:

(1) Fondant

(2) Color Pastes

(3) Water

(4) Vodka

(5) Corn Syrup

(6) Red Color Dust

PROCEDURE:

(1) Print out the logo and cut it to make templates.

(2) Roll out red and yellow fondant and allow them to air dry for about 30 minutes. Place the templates on the fondant and cut out the various pieces. Leave these to dry for a couple of hours.

(3) Mix a 50-50 blend on corn syrup and vodka and brush the cutouts for gloss. Leave them to air dry.

(4) Stick the various pieces together using a bit of water.

(5) Brush the edges of the center piece with red color dust.

(6) Stuff an extruder fitted with a round disk with red fondant and fill in the spaces on both balls of the logo with red fondant strings. Switch to black fondant and outline the logo with black fondant strings.

(7) Transfer the logo to the top of a covered cake. Use a bit of water to stick the logo to the cake.

(8) This same technique can be used on other types of cakes like the beer bottle cap cake below.
