PROCEDURE:

(1) Print out a fondant shoe template from the web. This can be found online with a simple google search of “fondant baby shoes template.” The template should have a front flap, shoe cover, front toe cover and sole. Cut out the templates. (I actually did a google search, clicked on the picture, placed a sheet of paper on my laptop screen, used a pen to trace out the templates on the paper and cut them out.)

(2) Roll out white and light blue (cornflower blue) fondant. Leave the rolled out fondants to dry for about 30 minutes, place the templates on the rolled out fondants and cut out the shapes (Two of each). Allowing the fondant dry a bit before cutting will give you sharper lines and make the fondant easier to handle and manage. The Flaps and shoe covers should be blue and the sole and front toes cover should be white. The soles should be thicker than the flap and shoe covers. Remember to flip the sole template over before cutting the second one to make a pair of shoes.

(3) After cutting out the shoe covers, roll out white fondant, brush it with a bit of water, place the blue cutouts on the fondant and make a second cut. This will give the shoes white lining. This step is optional but highly advised.

(4) Use a fondant embosser to make patterns on the shoe cover. To make the lace holes, roll out white fondant and cut out circles using a round pipping tip. Stick the circles to the shoe cover and use a smaller round pipping tip to make holes in the middle of the circles.

(5) Brush the sides of the soles with a bit of water. Stick the flaps to the front of the soles. You can stuff them to provide structure while they dry.

(6) Stick the white front toes cover on the flaps and cut out any excess.

(7) Stick the shoe covers around the back and sides of the shoes. Stretch them as needed so they cover the soles properly. Stuff the inside of the shoes with paper towels until the fondant dries properly.

(8) Cut out long strips of white fondant about 1 cm wide. Make vertical markings on them and stick them to the base of the shoes.

(9) Stick plain white fondant strips on the back of the shoes forming a loop on top.

(10) Create designs on the shoes. I used round white fondant with a heart cutout. You might want to make the design a star instead. Leave the shoes to dry.

(11) After the shoes have dried enough to handle, cut out white fondant strips and use them as laces for the shoes sticking them to the shoes with water.

That’s all there is to it. Happy caking!
